Climb aboard our 131-foot schooner to experience hands-on sailing adventure.
Trainees are not simply passengers during their time with Ocean Passages. They are active crew members aboard the vessel. Trainees live aboard and work side-by-side with professional crew to learn seamanship, sail handling and leadership – confidently hauling lines and steering the ship by the end of the voyage.
Seeing land from sea and spending the night at sea changes perspectives. Through team building, structured schedules and semi-isolation from the “real world,” our voyages provide an opportunity for trainees to discover aspects of themselves, their co-trainees and the sea that they may not have thought possible – all from the unique perspective of a Tall Ship and with a commitment to responsible stewardship of these marine environments.
No sailing experience is needed, but team spirit is essential to keeping the ship on course.
Voyaging on a traditional Tall Ship is a life-changing experience. You’ll have more fun than you can imagine while learning ship rigging, mastering its mechanical systems and taking your shift on watch at the bow. We’ll work and eat and play together, waking up to dramatic ocean dawns, taking command at the helm and swapping stories in the galley at night.
All the while, you’ll build personal confidence and forge the lifelong bonds of a ship community sharing an extraordinary voyage.
Aboard SSV Harvey Gamage, your journey begins when you stop putting yourself first. At sea, it’s all about ship and shipmate — and only then about self. As our former student, Amanda Avitabile, said, “The Harvey Gamage . . . helped me to learn more about myself than any other experience in my 22 years here on earth. Living on a ship, working together to live day by day created unbreakable bonds between myself, my fellow peers, and the ship's one-of-a-kind, incredible crew.”
If you take care of Harvey Gamage, she will take care of you. If you think about your shipmates first, they will always be there for you.
