Waiting at Stock Island for a weather window, the ship is making final preparations for a winter in Cuba. This includes getting supplies, which may or may not be readily available there: paint, oil, toilet paper, sunscreen, canned food. The crew has been getting in a last taste of the USA – movies, cheeseburgers, the Internet.
It’s the experience of Captain Flansburg in the Caribbean that even Americans can get along quite well without things they think they will miss – overridden by the promise of new countries, new friends and new adventure. At noon Monday, the Captain anticipates hoisting sails in a couple of hours.
