Scouts at Sea
We had our first week-long program with the Pine Tree Council Boy Scouts of America and Tall Ships Portland Sea Scouts. Despite the small number of students on board, there was never a dull moment with this group!
We began the week with another sail up to beautiful Monhegan Island. Our Scouts, Scout leaders, and crew were able to spend some time hiking the perimeter of the island and purchasing fresh veggies from the local community garden.
Sticking with the small-town Maine feel, we had a quick sail over to Port Clyde, where we awoke to the sounds of a working harbor first thing the next morning.
We made our way south that afternoon to Boothbay Harbor and anchored near 420s practicing sail maneuvers.
The next day, we ventured on land so our scouts could visit Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey as she undergoes a complete restoration at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. Three of our students even did their Scout swimming test off a dock in the harbor!
We sailed back toward Great Diamond Island later that day to anchor for our final night of programming. It was an incredible week with our group of Scouts — they performed their watch duties and chores without any complaints and had the ship in tip-top shape before she arrived back at Portland Yacht Services. Another outstanding week at sea for Harvey Gamage!
