Science and Sea

As the Gamage prepares to sail north back to Portland, we just announced exciting plans to partner this summer with Baxter Academy for Technology and Science on a two-week sailing excursion open to all Maine high school students.  Our program will allow students to gain nautical experience and earn digital badges in marine sciences while exploring the Maine coast aboard our 130-ft wooden schooner.

The voyage will depart from Portland Harbor July 22 and sail the Maine coast through August 5.  Students (ages 15-19) will learn how to sail a Tall Ship, participating in everything from watch shifts to navigation to food prep.

The program is designed to connect Maine high school students with the marine sciences that drive our coastal economy.  Each student will choose a marine specialty and work with professional researchers and entrepreneurs at specified sites from Damariscotta to Stonington.  Opportunities for fieldwork range from studying seaweed to oyster farms to lobster hatcheries.

Students can download the application here — the application deadline is May 1, 2017.  For questions about logistics or scholarships, please contact Heather D'Ippolito at Baxter Academy.
