Coffee and Cuba

Our deckhand and shipboard photographer Jocelyn Leighton returned to the Gamage a week ago as the ship completes her voyage home to Portland.  Through May 14, some of Jocelyn’s photos from Cuba are on exhibition at Coffee By Design, a Maine staple focused on sustainable farming practices.  CBD always encourages buying local and demonstrates this spirit by showcasing the work of Maine artists.

Below you can find Jocelyn’s artist statement and some of her Cuba photos.  If you’re in Portland, please stop by CBD at 67 India Street in downtown Portland!

When a tourist goes to Cuba, much of the attention is on vintage cars.  Cubans kept these cars going because they had no choice.  My photography attempts to go beyond the surface of an imposed nostalgia to explore the resourcefulness of Cubans and their country.  Here is a personal world much like our own where people live, play, love, worry.  My goal was to capture the common ground between people to encourage a closer relationship with humanity.
